FAQ

Q. I have some webspace that came free with my Internet Service Provider, can I use that to put my website on instead?

A: Yes, of course - however you will miss out on more advanced features such as scripting languages and databases. Secondly, being free there will be less guarantees on the reliability of the service and finally - an experienced web user would be able to quickly tell if a website was hosted on free webspace and that alone would most likely put them off using you.

Q: My Nephew says they can design me a website, why not get them to do it instead?

A: Your nephew may be a very talented web designer, but sometimes getting relatives or mates to do a favour for you can be a false economy. A bad website is often worse than having no website, and can poorly represent you business. These days, when looking for a service a lot of peoples first port of call would be the internet so it’s not worth skimping on it! Finally, a paid professional is more likely to deliver the goods on time than someone doing it for little or nothing.

Q: How much bandwidth do I need?

A: Your bandwidth allowance is the amount of data that can be downloaded from your webspace a month. For a text and image based site you don’t need to worry much about bandwidth, a typical single webpage with basic images shouldn’t be more than 50KB, so based on that 400,000 hits a month would use up a gigabyte of bandwidth. If you wish to host audio files, high resolution images or other large files you will have to work out how much you expect it to be downloaded. With our packages you can easily upgrade if you find your needs change.

Q: I need less features than your basic package offers, can I downgrade it?

A: Because we try to keep our prices as competitive as possible, we can’t afford to offer webspace cheaper than advertised so we try to compensate by making it as well featured as possible.

Q: Randomwebhost.com are cheaper than you, why is that?

A: Two likely reasons - one is that they are not UK based, and the other is that they cram hundreds of sites onto each server all sharing the same resources resulting in very slow performance. Having a UK based server is vital if you are a UK based business, firstly it offers faster performance for your customers and secondly some search engines take the server location into account when delivering results so it could leave your site out of "UK only" searches.

Q: What tools do you offer for managing my website?

A: If you choose to host with us, you get a web based control panel (Plesk), PHPMyadmin for managing your database, Horde webmail and Webalizer web statistics for analysing your site usage. Together these tools allow you to design, manage and market a successful and sophisticated website.
